On Friday during our Midterm break, work will begin on the schools new Outdoor Classroom. Everyone in Scoil Na Mainistreach is very excited about having an outdoor classroom. Kildare County Council are presenting us with the outdoor classroom in recognition of the wonderful work we are doing in school on Biodiversity including the Bug Hotel!!
If you are a teacher or pupil and you are looking for ideas, then this is the website for you! Today we have added a new activities page that lets people play top trumps, identify bugs and colour butterfly's and other insects that may be visiting the Bug Hotel! Have a look!
On Monday the 10th of February we went to inspect the Bug hotel and saw worms, other than Wendy of course, and found an intriguing visitor that looked a bit orange and a bit brown and looked like a worm but it had legs. We went to Mr.Mescal who knows many things about wildlife and showed him the bugs images(which can be found in the Gallery) and he said it was a larvae. We went to just double check with an expert on wildlife who was visiting the school that day. His Name is Paddy Madden and he told us that it was a type of larvae called a wire-worm. Paddy's website can be seen here. We looked up Wire-worms and found more information on Wire-worms which can be seen in the Bug Hotel Visitors section of this website.
Below is a better picture of a Wire-worm not the visitor to our Hotel. The Bug Hotel received some welcome news recently when An Taisce the organisers of Green Schools published a report on the School Bug Hotel on its website. They included a link to our website which has resulted in an increase in visitors to our site. The report also highlights the tree planting which took place in the school before Christmas. The report from the An Taisce website can be seen HERE
Every day we have been keeping track of all the visitors and like it says in the title we got 400 Visitors in 1 day! We checked on the 20th of January and we were astonished. We hope that on a future date we have even more visitors viewing our website.
Today Ms Holmes added the Bug Hotel on the school website as a report. We would like to thank her for that. Also Ms Holmes has sent our website link to Green schools Ireland. If you want to see the School website click the button below as always.
Big thanks today to Mr.Marken's first class boys who became the first boys to enter the colouring competition. All the boys worked very hard and their pictures are now available to view in the gallery. The gallery button like last time it is down below.
Today is a historic day, because like it says in the title we have had our first visitor to the bug hotel other than Benny. Called Wendy the Worm she was seen entering the bug hotel at 1:40pm and was found by Mr. Minnock. To see pictures of Wendy click on the gallery button below.
Also the travel rater AKA Alvin in Ms Holmes's class came to have a look at the hotel. We gave him a tour and he rated it 5 stars. He said it was very big and well full up with materials. Today on the 17th of January 2014 we have received the first of our many story's to come to the website by Ibraham in third in MR. Curtins class. We have posted his story on the story's page. We will be expecting more in future. Thanks and well done to Mr Curtin and all the boys who are working very hard writing their Benny the Bug stories.
For the past two days Mr.Minnock and I have visited senior classes explaining about the bug hotel, the website and last of all Benny the Bug. They seem to be very interested in all of these things and their teachers are going to send them home soon with the competitions sheet.
Plus we are going to try to go to junior and senior infants to explain about the coloring competitions the website and Benny as simply as possible over the next couple of days. |
